Hooked Dollies by Judy Taylor
When you think about it, rug hooking isn't only for rugs is it?  A hooked piece can as easily be interesting bits of fabric, sewn together to make a cuddly 3-D doll!

Whenever I see lovely doll clothes, or perhaps some darling baby or children's outfit, I can't resist taking it home.  I design the doll to go with the dress.  I lay the dress out on paper, and free-hand a head, hands and legs (if I want the feet to show, like in the kitty doll left) that I want to hook.  I cut out the paper pattern pieces and lay them on burlap backing, and draw their shapes on the backing.

I choose yarn colors to match the dress, and I hook the face, the back of the head and the hands & feet.  When they are hooked, I cut the hooked pieces apart, and hand sew them together.  With plain cotton fabric, I create the torso, and sew the hooked pieces to the body.  I love to add yarn hair, which I sew to the head and make braids or pig-tails.
