Persian Rug 7'x9'
Designed and hooked by Melanie Morrison
I have been hooking for about 12 years now. Right from the get-go I wanted to do a big rug and had no idea how long it would take. I did a Kashani Hunt a few years back and it's a fair size, and took about a year, so I thought this would take two years or more. I kept the project in my living room where it was "in my face" as the kids woud say, to get it done and out of the way... that worked great. Whenever I sat-- I hooked... so got quite a lot done during the 5-6 colder months.
This is the largest rug I have attempted. It's my own design in that I researched Persian designs, and chose the motifs I liked best to incorporate into my rug. I had to make templates for the edgings but transferred the centre using see-through "red dot." It was necessary to join two pieces of Scottish burlap which was a challenge but with the help of a dear friend, the better part of a day and three rows of handstitching, following the threads... we did it.
I muted the red as I wanted this rug to look the vintage of the antique table that would be sitting on it. The cut is #4 and working on it daily for a few to several hours a day, it took a year and a half to complete and now rests under our dining table. It gave me a great sense of accomplishment to see it finally done! I've found a satisfying hobby, and to top it off, some wonderful new friends.
