Featured Rug of the Month--

Celtic Knot 48" round
Designed and hooked by Judy Taylor
I made this rug using about 1/2 handspun yarns in natural colors, and the other half was Halcyon rug yarn. I chose the colors because I knew I had enough to finish it (I didn't want to get most of the way through the hooking and find that I needed more of a crucial color!). I had to hook some sections more than once as I was choosing my colors. Some yarns that look great side by side in the skein, didn't go together at all in the hooked piece, so I had to do a bit of experimentation.
The rug above was actually my second version of this design. The first rug I made was in only three colors (see picture to the left, sorry I don't have a better picture!), white for the ribbons, light grayish brown for the ribbon outline and light gray for the background. The white and gray were both Halcyon rug yarn, and the ribbon outline was Reynold's Lopi.
This rug is big, but actually surprisingly easy to hook. I found an easy rhythm by doing one ribbon outline, hooking the ribbon color in 4 rows, then the other ribbon outline. This way, all of my ribbons were the same width, no matter where I hooked on the rug. As I hooked, I also did the background areas, so I could cut off all of my ends. The yarns were thick, so the hooking seemed to go quickly.
I am planning to try this design in other colors, maybe some lovely purple and green Coopworth wool that I spun recently. Stay tuned and I'll post the new version!
