Good Morning My Beauty
Designed and Hooked by Judy Taylor
My daughter Gwen is a 3rd year Japanese major, and I made this wallhanging for her this Christmas. It is handspun Jacob wool, with silver beads running down the length of the design, and beaded tassels hanging below. Of course, I do not speak Japanese, and so I needed an expert to help me with the kanji and hiragana. I love Japanese writing, such beautiful and artistic symbols, but I would never have attempted to try a project like this on my own. Many thanks, Yumi Sakai e, doumo arigatou gozaimashita!!!!!! (ok, Gwen helped me with that part!) The design is a combination of japanese kanji and hiragana because as Yumi informed me, "We don't say that"! So what we settled on was "Oyahou utsukushii ko" or "Good morning lovely child". When Gwen opened the gift, there was an interminable pause, and I was sure I had got it wrong, but thankfully, she was able to read it the way it was intended!
