Creating Heirlooms
Heart and Roses Cushions
Designed and hooked by Maya Drummond
Featured Rug of the Month-- February
I made this chair-back cushion for my rocking chair and loved it so much that I made four more. I used a combination of acrylic and wool yarns, in a backing of monk's cloth. At the very end I added the variegated turquoise to pink poca-dots over the navy blue chenille background to liven things up. The backing is flannel and there is polifil inside to add some comforting cushion and warmth. I made one for my grandmother, and for my mother-in-law, and for my husband and for myself too! They are really decorative and fun-- a great way to make an old wooden rocking chair feel like new again. My designs are fairly predictable, hearts and roses and stars and vines-- but I love the simplicity of fold art with the aliveness of movement. The very soft and plush "hand" or feel of the hooked yarns are as important to me as the colors-- sensuous and relaxing and playful.
