Creating Heirlooms
Featured Rug of the Month
September 2011
Cozy Rose, 22.5"x32.5"
Designed and hooked by Judy Taylor
The story for this rug actually begins with the Featured Rug of the Month, July, 2011, called "Box 'O Crayons".
I hooked Box 'O Crayons after I had assembled a large amount of yarn in every weight, texture, color and brand to photograph for my new book, Joy Of Hooking (With Yarn!). It seemed a shame to put all that yarn back when it looked so nice together, so I designed the Box 'O Crayons rug.
Well, don't you know, I had some leftovers... what to do? Overdye!
Assorted yarns for the book
Same leftovers, overdyed with turquoise, lime green and hot pink
I had over 80 colors leftover, so to save time and to avoid having to cross-tie 80 little skeins, I wrapped the colors on the niddy noddy, tying one end of a color to the next, and made 9 large mixed skeins. I lightly overdyed these skeins in turquoise, lime green and hot pink and with those, I hooked the Crown of Thorns rug.
Still lots of usable yarn... what to do? Overdye!
I overdyed these skeins, all with a light dye of colonial blue, and from that, I hooked the background for Cozy Rose.
I separated the darkest samples, the medium reds and the light reds, and used them to create the effect that the background gets darker toward the edges.
I used handspun yellow, gold and green for the flowers and scrolls.
But darn it, I still had leftovers! What to do?
OVERDYE! (tune in later to see the final project in this adventure!)
