Featured Rug of the Month-
July 2011
Box 'O Crayons, 69.5"x24.5"
Designed and hooked by Judy Taylor
I designed this rug while finishing up my new book. I needed photos of yarn, lots and lots of yarn (the new book is called Joy of Hooking- With Yarn!) When the pictures were all shot, I had this wonderful rainbow of yarn in one-ounce skeins. It seemed a shame to just throw them back on the shelf, but how to use them to their best advantage?
This design is based on a traditional scallop pattern, although since I had 82 different colors to incorporate, I split all of the scallop rows in two so I could get them all in.

Needless to say, it was a delight to hook this rug. It hooked quickly, too. I thought up a time saver that seemed to work great-- I numbered each skein with a small slip of paper once I had decided what order they should go in, but I didn't roll the skeins into balls right away. Instead, I rolled one skein at a time, and hooked a small part of that colored row. That way, I didn't have to go digging around in the yarn bag to figure out what color goes next. I could just check the next hooked row, grab that yarn and go!
I still needed to organize the yarn balls into three bags, so I would only have to carry around 1/3 of the yarn while hooking!
