Featured Rug of the Month--
September 2009

I had my booth at this year's Shepherd's Extravaganza at the Puyallup Spring Fair, and while I was spinning up a storm in my booth, I thought I ought to stock up on nice spinning wool for rug hooking.  I went over to Dawn Lantz (Dawn's Custom Carding) and Lin Schwider's booth (The Pines Farm) and went through the booth, picking out all of my favorite colors.  I didn't have any specific project in mind, it was just a good time to stock up on all their beautiful stuff.

I took my huge bag of carded wool back to my own booth, and as I sat spinning all day, I looked at this gorgeous bag of wool, and I thought of a bird.  That was the beginning of the inspiration for this rug.

Right around that time, I got to see "Sunday in the Park With George" at the Fifth Avenue Theater in Seattle, WA, which is a beautifully restored old theater, oppulantly decorated with ancient Chinese decor, with lots of mythical birds everywhere.  I decided my bird rug would be of this mythical bent.  This design came from that idea.

Now if I had designed the rug first, and then went out to color plan it, I might have found the process difficult.  I might have agonized about finding the "right" blues, purples and pinks, but I had a bag full of this carded wool in these lovely colors, and as soon as I got the design on linen, the rest was easy.
