Antique Sleigh Rug  21"x26.5"
Date unknown

I found this rug in an antique store in Westport, Washington.  It is hooked mainly with fabric strips, wool and silk, plus some yarn.  Someone mounted it on a lovely wooden frame, with what looks like faux worm wood (I think it might have been carved to look like that!).  There are no initials or year, or any other identifying marks, so who can say when it was hooked or by whom!  I might be able to learn more if I took it off the frame, but it is stapled to the wooden back, and I'm afraid to try it.  It would be interesting if I could figure out what the backing material was, or if there is a lot of fading on top.  If the colors on the back of the rug are a lot brighter than the front, it would suggest that it has been around for a long while.  Even without knowing the origin though, it is undoubtedly charming, and I felt rather lucky to have found it!

Does anyone recognize the pattern?  Let me know if you've seen it in a catalog, maybe I can guess more about the date.

Do you have a rug you would like to see featured on this website?  Let me know!  If your rug is featured, you will receive a copy of my book "Hooking With Yarn" or a free yard of linen.  All rugs have a story, whether it is a rug you have made, found or inherited, and we love to hear all about them!
