Aganu-Te 25"x16"
Designed and hooked by Mary Jones, St. Andrews, NB
I made this mat for my sister's best friend Marion on the occasion of her 60th Birthday. Marion had seen a number of mats and wall-hangings I had done, including one for my sister for her shop and had commented on them. Barb, my sister, asked if I could do up something for Marion but not one for her shop (they are both owner/operators of hair salons) as she would soon be retiring.
Marion is a Malecite Native from Perth Andover, New Brunswick, Canada, and so I thought that I could do up a welcome mat for her home in her native language. The malecite language is taken from the Algonquin tribe language and although they do not have an actual word for welcome- "aganu-te" is a welcoming phrase in Malecite.
Marion has a very eclectic home so colour was not something I had to worry about but tried to choose colours that could go anywhere.
The wall-hanging is done in #4 and #5 cut, spot-dyed and as-is textured wools on cotton rug warp. The feather seems ready to lift off the mat, or perhaps it just recently landed. It is bound with woollen yarn and then a teal yarn is overlaid to bring the central background colour to the edges. The Dream Catcher is done with novelty yarn, beads and feathers.
