This beautiful antique hooked rug dates back at least 200 years (source: "The Hooked Rug" by William Winthrop Kent, written in 1930). I was especially interested in it because it is a rare example which includes both wool yarn and fabric strips in it's design.
When William Winthrop Kent wrote about hooked rugs in the 1930's, he made no distinction between yarn and fabric strips in terms of quality or value. Yet today, most rugs are hooked with fabric strips. Indeed, the craft of hooking with fabric strips is called traditional rug hooking. As we can see from this very early example, wool yarn is also very traditional!
