Fiber Folk and Hookers Anonymous raise $400 for the Folklife Foundation!

198 volunteers of all ages and hooking experience joined to hook this commemorative rug for the Folklife Festival of Seattle, Washington.  It was auctioned off in November, 2006.
The caption on the rug reads: "In each ray of sunshine, there are many colors."  This represents the theme of the Folklife Festival, bringing together artists, musicians, dancers, chefs, storytellers, and the public from all over the world.

Visitors to the Fiber Folk booth also got to try their hand at weaving, making a yarn doll, and watching the spinners demonstrate.
The rug was designed in three pieces, so different parts of the rug could be brought to different events, to include the maximum number of volunteers.  In order to keep the design consistent, the three pieces of linen were first sewn together, then the design was drawn on.  While the pieces were separated, we could hook everywhere, except the few inches next to the seams.  When the bulk of the rug was hooked, I re-sewed the pieces together with upholstery thread, and tacked the selvedges to the backing.  Then I hooked the areas around the seams, hooking back and forth over the seam, to give it added support.
Everyone who hooked on the rug signed a piece of fabric which was sewn on the back of the finished rug, so the donor who bought it would be able to view the names of all of the volunteers.
Do you have a rug that you would like to see featured on this website?  If so e-mail me!  If your rug is featured, you will get your choice of a copy of my book "Hooking With Yarn," or a free yard of linen!
