Creating Heirlooms
Many of us have probably thought about making a hooked rug, perhaps even started a project.  In this video, Judy Taylor presents the viewer with excellent, detailed footage on the subject.

After a short introduction, including a history of rug hooking and a brief tour of Judy Taylor's Edeldal Farm, the video explores the various materials used.  The author favors specific backings for certain projects and explains why.  She also prefers to use handspun wool and mohair (the perfect use for coarser fibers of certain wool breeds and many of the senior adult angora fleeces).  It is explained that it is possible with exceptionally long locks, to hook rugs without spinning the fiber into yarn.  Detailed instructions for estimating yardage needed for a project are also given.

Next, with lots of close-ups, the actual hooking techniques are shown.  Then, finishing and care are covered.  The video ends with a gallery of shots of various projects, including rugs, clothing and stuffed toys.  A catalog of materials and kits available through Edeldal Farm accompanies the video.  A Beginner's Guide to Traditional Nantucket Rug Hooking, by Judy Taylor, 1996.  Running time approximately 28 minutes.
